I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I thought the subject was deep with a good story line. It had a good pace to it. The end got a little quick with the author trying to wrap up the story but I think it could have gone on a little longer, explain a few more things. Other than that it was great. Penelope’s writing style for this book is awesome. I think she really portrayed how teenagers talk and the things that they do, especially in high school.
Tate is a smart girl. She’s not like the rest of the teenagers who like to party a lot and get crazy. She wants to get into a good school with good grades. Even if she wanted to have a bit of fun she’s not able to do that without being picked on by Jared and Madoc, his minion. Tate can also have a bad girl side to her. At least, she came back from France with a different attitude. She’s not going to take anymore of Jared’s crap. She can be witty and feisty but she can’t make up her mind when it comes to Jared. Deep down she thinks she loves him but she hates him as well and can’t understand how he can treat her the way he does. This is one thing that annoyed me a little about her but overall I liked her character.
Jared comes off as being big and tough and not to be messed with. He’s strong and sexy and he races cars. Guys want to be him and girls want to be with him. But inside, Jared is broken. Something happened that summer at his dads and Tate wants to know what. Jared will do anything and everything to get under Tate’s skin. You know when you’re younger and a boy picks on you and you’re told he likes you. Well this is kind of like that but in a much deeper way.
There are a few side characters that could be considered main characters. They play pretty important parts. Madoc, is Jared’s friend and minion. He helps Jared with the pranks and rumors on Tate. K.C. is Tate’s best friend and mainly her only friend. There is one thing I didn’t like about her and two words: Girl Code…Either way, all the other characters are pretty entertaining and they all have some part in the story that ties everything together.
I definitely want to read the second book called Until You which is essentially the same book but in Jared’s point of view. I am really curious to know his side as he has such a deep back story and I am interested to know why he is the way he is and why he truly treats Tate the way he does. I definitely recommend this book but be warned that it is a New Adult novel intended for mature readers. There is sexual content in here and probably not appropriate for younger readers.
