This is the second book in the Dark Duet series. The first book being Captive in the Dark. If you have not read that book then you need to read that before you read this review. Not that it’s a spoiler review, but you won’t know anything about what I’m talking about and it might be enough of a spoiler for you anyways. This is the continuation of the first book and a lot of explaining is done. That is the majority of what this book holds. It took me a lot longer to get through this second book than it did the first. Not because it wasn’t good – because it was, but it was a lot of explaining and it’s written in a different format than the first.
The book is broken up into chapters of Caleb and Olivia. Caleb’s perspective is in past when he was younger and also when everything was happening with him and Livvie. Olivia’s perspective is broken into the present time and then a lot of times of her explaining things that happened. At first I was very confused. I didn’t know what the heck was going on. I took a little while for me to get the hang of how the author wanted to portray everything. In the end, I definitely got the message from the author and I was actually quite happy with how it was laid out. Definitely a lot longer than the first book and with a lot of explaining and remembering going on, we get the whole back story of Caleb and also what went down at the end of the first book.
I’m not writing a lot for this review because I don’t want to give anything away. There is too much information in this book for me to get into things specifically. I am happy with how things ended up even though things took a turn. I think the author did a great job with making the whole story come together, it is very complex. This book is definitely not suitable for younger readers. There is a lot of violence, sexual content and even possible triggers. It has to do with woman slavery and very dark dom/sub matters. But, I do highly recommend this book and series if you are looking for a complex story with a lot of background and sexy alpha males.
