The Rule Book

I wish I liked this book more than I did. Not that it’s a bad book, but when I read the synopsis, I was very intrigued.  I had a different vision for what it was going to be about. When I think about a “hot office romance”, I think about a lot of sexual tension, lots of flirting, etc. With this book, there was a little bit of flirting, a bit of banter between them but other than that, not much else. The writing was good, it flowed nicely and was easy to read. It just lacked the sexiness that I was hoping for.

Lainey Taylor started a new job at a social networking firm. There are a lot of rules in the handbook and she just couldn’t seem to follow any of them. She was always getting into trouble with the boss by putting her foot in her mouth. She’s funny, hard working and a loving person. Her mom is sick with cancer and lives in a different state but, Lainey works her ass off so that she can send her mom money to help with the medical bills.

Brogan Starr is the owner of Starr Media. He is the hot, untouchable boss. Surprisingly, he has a bunch of arm tattoos from his wrists up. He’s strict with a lot of rules and he can be cocky at times. He’s got a dog with the opposite of personality to him, sloppy and drools everywhere. Lainey is to walk and feed him when Brogan is working late.

Lainey and Brogan have little run-ins that result in a bit of flirting and they end up spending some time together. The more time they spend, the more their attraction becomes larger for the both of them. But, there comes a time when Brogan must follow the rules that he sets and he breaks it off with Lainey.

A series of events happen throughout the book and it ends pretty quickly. I was surprised it ended so quick because I expected a little more towards the end. But, all in all it was a decent book and I don’t have much to complain about. Not much mention of sex so it’s not imperative that a mature reader reads it but, it’s still considered a New Adult novel.
