The Sea of Tranquility

This book is so awesome. It’s beautiful, and brilliant. I’m glad I read this book when I did because I was needing a book that was light and fluffy. I’ve been reading a lot of darker books and this one was just perfect. A great story of two people who are slightly damaged but come together and form a friendship first and then turns into love. I really like how this book isn’t straight to the point, love in your face. It’s pace is slow and building and it’s words make you fall in love yourself.

Nastya is a senior in high school who moves in with her Aunt to start fresh. New town, new school, new everything. She doesn’t expect to find new friends because she doesn’t want them. She would rather have them all stare at her when she dresses in all black mini skirts with low cut tops and face full of makeup. Something bad happened to Nastya and now she has anxiety and scars. She doesn’t want to talk about it and she’s not going too. Josh Bennett is a loner at school because everyone thinks that if they go near him they’ll die. Everyone that Josh has ever loved has died and he thinks he’s cursed, so he doesn’t interact with people at school and they don’t interact with him. Josh likes to build things out of wood. At school, his favourite class is shop and at home in his garage.

When Josh first sees Nastya he can’t help but stare at her – and not in the way everyone else is. He is so drawn to her. He wants to not like her but he does and when she shows up at his house late one night lost, he can’t help but want to be around her. When she keeps coming back and just sits behind him on the counter to watch him work, they form a bond of friendship. The more that they spend together, the stronger the bond is. No one really knows about this friendship of theirs because they don’t talk at school. The only one who knows is Drew. He is Josh’s secret friend. Josh has dinner at his house on Sunday’s with his family, but at school they don’t act like friends. Drew has come to like Nastya and they hang out sometimes too. I really liked Drew’s character throughout the book. At first he seemed like he was just the popular type who slept with every girl but he is a good friend, loyal and funny.

I kept getting butterflies in my stomach every time I read something adorable that either of them said. It’s such a cute love story. It all comes together pretty quick at the end but everything leading up to it is nice and slow and perfect. I am so glad I read this book and by this author. The writing is great, and the characters were described just right. I will be interested in reading more from this author and I definitely recommend reading this book. I would say this is perfect for Young Adults – not too young – but high school kids should have no problem reading this.

I live in a world without magic or miracles. A place where there are no clairvoyants or shapeshifters, no angels or superhuman boys to save you. A place where people die and music disintegrates and things suck. I am pressed so hard against the earth by the weight of reality that some days I wonder how I am still able to lift my feet to walk.

Former piano prodigy Nastya Kashnikov wants two things: to get through high school without anyone learning about her past and to make the boy who took everything from her—her identity, her spirit, her will to live—pay.

Josh Bennett’s story is no secret: every person he loves has been taken from his life until, at seventeen years old, there is no one left. Now all he wants is be left alone and people allow it because when your name is synonymous with death, everyone tends to give you your space.

Everyone except Nastya, the mysterious new girl at school who starts showing up and won’t go away until she’s insinuated herself into every aspect of his life. But the more he gets to know her, the more of an enigma she becomes. As their relationship intensifies and the unanswered questions begin to pile up, he starts to wonder if he will ever learn the secrets she’s been hiding—or if he even wants to.

The Sea of Tranquility is a rich, intense, and brilliantly imagined story about a lonely boy, an emotionally fragile girl, and the miracle of second chances.
